Kaede Miyomi (実黄泉カエデ)
Kaede is a cat spirit from the underworld. Although her appearance gives the impression that she is just a child, in actuality, she has been one of the guides for wayward souls down in Hell for thousands of years. She is rather quiet, sweet, and despite the role she has down in Hell, Kaede is a temperate and reasonable being. She is able to show a wonderful smile to each of the wayward souls lost in desperate. When these souls see her doing this, they usually then think that they are in Heaven instead of Hell; however, they do not know that it was actually a lonely and empty smile, one that is searching for a certain someone else…

Togusa Tsukino (月野兎草)
Togusa is an Earthen rabbit spirit. Some suspect that she may be a distant descendant of the Lunar (Moon-based) Rabbit's Dynasty, which itself has a questionable existence, and no one really knows for sure if it exists or not. Togusa has, for thousands of years, been living in the forests and enjoying her most loved pastime of tricking humans. Always in high spirits, Togusa is sometimes a little clumsy and may have a childish demeanor, but this belies a powerful ability she possesses: the ability to transform anything that is negative into something that is positive. She once heard about the existence of other non-human spirits like herself that dwell in a hidden area, and ever since then, she has been searching for that place with little luck…


Story

One day, driven by curiosity, Togusa managed to make her way into the underworld despite the fact that she is not yet dead. Once there, she met Kaede, whom was very surprised to see a rabbit spirit like her down there. Togusa decided to spend her days right beside Kaede, whom observed what Togusa did and how she did so; when nobody else was looking, Togusa tricked the wayward souls.

The joy of Togusa doing what she loved began to fill up Kaede's heart bit by bit. Togusa herself was charmed by Kaede's smile and kindness, and was eager to make her even more happy, day by day. Togusa taught Kaede how to live with the feelings of love, and as a result of them spending time together, the two of them filled the holes in each other's heart, no longer feeling lonely. The pair spent thousands of years together, but unbeknownst to them, Togusa's presence in the underworld would have an effect on her…

After much time passed, Togusa, whom truly was not supposed to be in such a place as the underworld, started to fade and become see-through, day after day. Kaede was afraid for Togusa's existence, and in desperation, investigated on what was taking place. She eventually arrived at the horrifying conclusion that only if Togusa were to actually die and become a mere soul (like those present in the underworld) would she be able to stay there. A worried, desperate, and almost heartbroken Kaede wondered to herself whether she would ever be able to remove Togusa's soul from her body, bringing death to the one that she loved so much.

Togusa, when she was told this, decided not to let Kaede do such a thing. She simply took ahold of Kaede's hand and led them out of the underworld and up to earth. Having left the underworld, Kaede was therefore no longer a guide, and both she and Togusa became fugitive spirits, living in the forests up on the human world.

In the time since then, nobody in the underworld has come to know of anybody searching for Kaede. Up in the human world, Kaede and Togusa now live side by side, surrounded by happiness and peace. The two spend their lives tricking humans and searching for other non-human spirits like themselves, even if all they have to go by are rumors. Humans can sometimes see the pair in mainly popular group celebrations like festivals, and they join them in the festivities.

Kaede es un espíritu de gato del inframundo. A pesar de que por su apariencia da la impresión de que no es más que una niña, en verdad ella ha sido una de las guías para las almas descarriadas abajo en el Infierno durante miles de años. Es más bien tranquila, dulce, y pese al papel que desempeña abajo en el Infierno, Kaede es alguien sensata y razonable. Ella es capaz de mostrar una preciosa sonrisa a cada una de las almas descarriadas sumidas en la desesperación con las que se encuentra. Cuando estas almas la ven, suelen pensar que están en el Cielo en lugar del Infierno; sin embargo, no saben que esa era en verdad una sonrisa solitaria y vacía, una en busca de otra persona…

Togusa Tsukino (月野兎草)
Togusa es un espíritu de conejo de la Tierra. Hay quien sospecha que pueda ser una descendiente lejana de la Dinastía de Conejos Lunares (establecidos en la Luna), la cual su propia existencia resulta dudable, y nadie sabe seguro si existen o no. Togusa ha estado, durante miles de años, viviendo en los bosques y disfrutando de su pasatiempo más querido de burlar a los seres humanos. Siempre de buen humor, Togusa es a veces un poco torpe y puede tener un comportamiento infantil, pero esto oculta una extraordinaria habilidad suya: la capacidad de convertir algo que es negativo en algo positivo. Una vez escuchó acerca de la existencia de otros espíritus no-humanos como ella que habitan en un área oculta, y desde entonces, ha estado buscando ese lugar con poca suerte.


Historia

Un día, conducida por su curiosidad, Togusa se las apañó para hacerse camino hacia el inframundo a pesar de que ella aún no estaba muerta. Una vez ahí, conoció a Kaede, quien se sorprendió mucho de ver a un espíritu de conejo como ella allí abajo. Togusa decidió pasar sus días junto a Kaede, la cual observó qué hacia Togusa y cómo lo hacía; cuando nadie estaba mirando, Togusa burlaba a las almas descarriadas.

La felicidad de Togusa haciendo lo que a ella más le gustaba empezó a llenar el corazón de Kaede poco a poco. Togusa a su vez fue atraída por la sonrisa de Kaede y su amabilidad, y estaba ansiosa por hacerla aún más feliz, día a día. Togusa enseñó a Kaede cómo vivir sintiendo amor, y como resultado de pasar el tiempo juntas, las dos llenaron el hueco en sus corazones, no sintiéndose ya nunca más solas. La pareja pasó miles de años junta, pero sin saberlo, la presencia de Togusa en el inframundo tendría un efecto en ella…

Después de que mucho tiempo pasara, Togusa, la cual se suponía que no debía estar en un lugar como el inframundo, empezó a desvanecerse y a transparentarse, día a día. Kaede estaba asustada por lo que le estaba ocurriendo a Togusa, y desesperada, investigó qué estaba pasando. Terminó por llegar a la horripilante conclusión de que sólo si Togusa moría y se convertía así en una mera alma (como aquellas presentes en el inframundo) sería capaz de estar ahí. Una preocupada, desesperada, y casi con el corazón roto Kaede se preguntaba a sí misma si sería capaz de arrebatar el alma de Togusa de su cuerpo, llevando a la muerte a quién ella tanto había querido.

Togusa, cuando supo todo esto, decidió no dejar a Kaede hacer tal cosa. Simplemente tomó la mano de Kaede y la llevó fuera del inframundo, arriba en la tierra. Habiendo dejado el inframundo atrás, Kaede dejó de ser por tanto una guía para las almas, y tanto ella como Togusa se convirtieron en espíritus fugitivos, viviendo en los bosques arriba en el mundo humano.

Desde ese momento hasta ahora, nadie en el inframundo llegó a saber nada de nadie buscando a Kaede. Arriba en el mundo humano, Kaede y Togusa ahora viven una junto a la otra, envueltas de felicidad y paz. Las dos pasan sus vidas burlando a los humanos y en busca de esos otros espíritus no-humanos como ellas, aún si todo no fueran más que rumores. Los humanos pueden a veces ver a la pareja en celebraciones populares como festivales, sumándose a la fiesta.
